Visiting for the first time?

We are glad that you are considering visiting First Lutheran Church, and are excited to welcome you! Here are a few questions and answers to help make your first visit a little easier.

1. I haven’t been to church in a while (or ever) and am nervous. Will I fit in?

2. You have lots of doors. Which door do I go in?

That depends.
Looking for the church office? Go in the glass double doors off of West Broadway.
Coming to worship on Sunday? Go in the big red doors.
Coming to worship on Saturday evening or need handicap access? Go in the glass door at the corner of Mill and Broadway.

3. What is worship like?

Saturday evening and Sunday 8:30 a.m. worship both follow a straightforward Lutheran liturgy.
You will receive a bulletin containing all the liturgy, prayers, and responses.
Most songs will come out of Evangelical Lutheran Worship, the red hymnal.
Saturday worship is led by piano. Sunday 8:30 a.m. worship is led by organ, piano, and choir.
Services include prayers, songs, responses, readings, a sermon, offering, and communion.

Sunday 11:00 a.m. worship follows the shape of the Lutheran liturgy, but with more flexibility within the form.
This service is casual and led by our New Song praise band.
Instead of bulletins and a hymnal, the elements of the service are projected on the wall.

No matter what your worship background or style, you have a place at FLC. Try out all three and see which you like best! Don’t worry if it seems like there are lots of moving parts – we’ll help you through.

4. Do I need to get dressed up to come to worship?

As the video said, the dress code here is “wear clothes.” Suits, jeans, and everything in-between!

5. What about my children?

Children are welcome at all of our worship services – we encourage families to participate together in all the elements of worship.
We have a staffed nursery space available to parents and children; follow the signs out the door at the front right of the sanctuary.
During the school year, Children’s Chapel is offered as part of 8:30 a.m. worship. Interested children are dismissed prior to the sermon for age-appropriate activities based on the day’s Bible readings. They return to the sanctuary in time for communion.
FLC offers first communion classes for 5th graders. If you would like your child to receive communion at an earlier age, please let the pastors know. (We have many children who do!)

6. Do I have to be Lutheran to take communion?

Nope. The communion table is not First Lutheran Church’s table, nor is it the ELCA’s table. It is Christ’s table, and he invites all who believe to join in the meal. If you have questions or concerns, feel free to talk to our pastors.

7. I’d like to talk to somebody about church, faith, doubts, questions, volunteer opportunities, etc. Who can I contact?

Pastor Chad and Pastor Melissa are always happy to talk to you! They can help you out or point you in the right direction. You can find them by calling the church office (563-382-2638) or by emailing them at pastorchad@firstlutherandecorah.org or pastormelissa@firstlutherandecorah.org. If you are interested in learning more about children’s and youth ministry, contact Adrian Walter, our Director of Youth and Family Ministries at adrian@firstlutherandecorah.org.
