Green Team

The First Lutheran Green Team began casually in the early 2000’s as the church council explored energy conservation opportunities. Replacement windows were installed in the education wing and many light bulbs were replaced with energy efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFLs).

A more formal team began meeting after an energy audit in 2009 revealed some significant opportunities for energy savings. Using the data from the energy audit, an energy efficiency and conservation block grant proposal was submitted through the City of Decorah to the Iowa Office of Energy Independence with funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The project was awarded $114,000 to be matched by the congregation. A new heating system and insulation was installed that has dramatically reduced heating costs and related greenhouse gas emissions.Click here to view First Lutheran’s energy useage statistics (PDF).

The Green Team is now firmly established and continues searching for more energy savings for the church property as well as educating members about creation care and environmental stewardship. A Green Fair was held in 2011 at which members could informally calculate their carbon footprint and see what local merchants had to offer in energy saving products. In 2012 a smaller insulation project was completed in the education wing and First Lutheran was invited to become a part of the ELCA’s Energy Stewards Initiative.

Other ongoing initiatives include working with the Luther College “Greening of the Church” student intern program and cooperating in the interfaith community garden to grow produce for the area food pantries. Most recently First Lutheran became a greening sister congregation with Holmenkirke of Oslo, Norway.
