The Outreach and Mission Committee would like to extend our sincere thanks for everyone who helped contribute and make Project Care 2012 such a success. This year, the two students who were graduating high school as well as graduating out of the foster care system had immense need. And thanks to the compassion and generosity of so many, we were able to equip them in this next phase of independent living with not such a burden for them! We extend a special thank you to community members, Bob and Sharon Lillie for the wonderful garage sale that they held to benefit Project Care- and all of those that came to shop there!

It's that time of year again! The women of the church will hold their annual rummage sale on Thursday, June 21 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Friday, June 22 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Of course, we need your help to supply all those wonderful items to sell. This is a great way to recycle what you no longer need. You may begin bringing items to the church Fellowship Hall on June 17th.  Items that sell well are dishes, knick-knacks, household items, toys, books and plants. We sell lots of clothes and give what is left to the Depot Outlet. We have also sold furniture, appliances, bedding and baskets. PLEASE DO NOT BRING COMPUTER MONITORS, TELEVISION SETS OR PAINT! WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SELL THEM AND IT COSTS US MONEY TO DISPOSE OF THEM. If you ask, we are also able to give you a receipt for tax purposes for items that are in good condition.
Please note that we will not be having the sale on Sat. as the hall will be in use for another event. That means we will need people to pack up Fri. evening and with enough volunteers it goes quickly.
Workers are needed to sort, price, sell and clean up. If you can help, please tell, e-mail, or call Diann Marten (dmarten7@gmail.com) (382-5537) or leave a message with Monica at the church office. Of course we need customers, so come to the sale, bring a shopping buddy and find some great bargains!

Summer Bible Study Retreat:  Members of the First Lutheran W/ELCA are inviting First Lutheran and area women to a Bible Study Retreat on Thursday, June 28 at 9:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall at First Lutheran. A salad luncheon will follow the study.  Participants will journey with Biblical travelers as they explore their own faiths. The study “Along the Way” appears in the June/July issues of GATHER magazine which will be in subscribers’ mailboxes by the middle of June. Copies will also be available at the retreat.  Chris Anderson will be leading the study.  Anderson has a Master of Divinity Degree from Southern Seminary in Columbia SC and a Master of Sacred Theology with Certification in Spiritual Direction. Ordained in 1979, she retired from the ministry in 2009 after serving parishes in Kannapolis, North Carolina and in Brooklyn and Long Island, New York.  Please make a reservation for the retreat by calling the First Lutheran secretary (563-382-2683) by Friday, June 22.

Call Committee Formation: The Church Council is welcoming submission of names to serve on the Call Committee being formed in our search for an Associate Pastor. The Call Committee will be composed of 8-10 members and will be charged with reviewing the needs of First Lutheran, and developing those characteristics which will be sought for the Associate Pastor. The time commitment for the committee will be approximately 1-2 hours weekly starting in June and continuing for approximately 3-4 months. This commitment will consist of meetings, at home study, and review of applications. As a church for all people, we encourage members of all ages, gender, family status, and length of tenure at First to submit their names. Please submit your name to any council member or the church office for consideration. The call committee will be voted on at a congregational meeting in June.
